M.Sc. in Economics
The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi offers a two-year full-time programme, Master of Science in Economics. Applications are invited from highly motivated UG students who envisage careers in academia, government, industry, and civil society organizations.
Who can apply?
Eligibility: Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.Sc./B.Com /B.Stat./B.Math./ B.Tech/B.E. or equivalent)
Minimum qualifications: CGPA of 5.5 for General/OBC/EWS (5.0 for SC/ST/PwD) on a 10 point scale or equivalent or 55% marks (50% for SC/ST/ PwD) in aggregate without rounding-off (of all the years/semesters of the qualifying degree, taking into account all subjects including languages and subsidiaries, all years combined).
Application process: Eligible candidates can apply for the programme through JAM. International applicants may apply using the International Application Portal: https://international.iitd.ac.in/
Special provision for 15 additional seats (in addition to the 25 seats through the JAM examination) only for the year 2024-25: The admission to these additional 15 seats will be through an entrance test to be conducted by the Institute. It is open to all eligible candidates as described in the prospectus (https://home.iitd.ac.in/pg-admissions.php ). Students who have taken the JAM exam already, are also welcome to sit for this exam. Reservations for the additional 15 seats will be as per the institute's norm. Applications for all PG programmes (MA/ MSc/ PhD) at IIT Delhi is expected to open on 20 March 2024. Programme duration
The programme will be a two-year full time comprising of four semesters starting in the July semester. In summer, students will be encouraged to undertake industry/academic/Govt./NGO internship (non-credit component).

Candidates in the final year of their qualifying programmes, who expect to complete all their qualifying degree requirements before the third week of July (or as advertised in the information brochure for the relevant admission year) are eligible to apply for admission. Eligible candidates can apply for the programme only through the JAM (Joint Admission Test for Masters). From the Academic Session 2004-05, IITs started conducting a Joint Admission Test for M.Sc. (JAM). The objective of JAM is to provide admissions to M.Sc. (Two Years), Joint M.Sc.-Ph.D., M.Sc.-Ph.D.
From the year 2021, a new paper Economics (EN) is added and the purview of JAM is extended to social sciences to provide admissions to Masters Programmes in Economics at the IITs. and to reflect this, the name of the exam is changed to Joint Admission Test for Masters (JAM) from 2021 (https://jam.iisc.ac.in/).
The fees for the M.Sc. in Economics programme are as per other M.Sc. programmes at IIT Delhi. The institute dues payable by the 2020 entry batch is ₹29,450/- for General/OBC/EWS and ₹24,450/- for SC/ST/PwD students. Membership of the associated mess is compulsory for the students with hostel accommodation. They will be required to pay mess dues around ₹45,000/- at the time of joining. The above fee may undergo upward revision. The exact amount of fees and mode of payment will be indicated in the admission offer letter. Please check the information brochure for further details.

IIT Delhi has an attractive Merit-cum-Means scholarship of Rs. 1,000/- per month. A tuition fee waiver is permissible for M.Sc. students to the extent of 25% of the sanctioned strength as per Institute rules. Only students whose parents’ gross income is up to 4.5 lac per annum are eligible to apply or as per govt. orders as applicable.

All post-graduate students admitted on a full-time basis may, subject to availability, avail of residential facilities in the hostels. The Institute has eleven boys’ hostels and two girls’ hostels. Each hostel is self-contained with amenities such as a reading room, an indoor games room, a lounge and a dining hall with a mess. Hostel rooms are adequately furnished. Please note that currently there is a severe shortage of hostel accommodation owing to renovation activities and the recent increase in student strength. The Institute may not be in a position to offer hostel accommodation to all post-graduate students. In such a case, some of the students will be accommodated in Nalanda/ IP apartments on a sharing basis. They may opt to cook in the apartment, eat out or choose to dine in a nearby hostel mess. The Institute will also try to facilitate students to get accommodation outside the campus, in case the students cannot be accommodated anywhere on campus.

This office is responsible for interaction with various industrial, management, and research organisations in the country and abroad to help students to get adequate training, and enabling them to get suitable employment. As a student of IIT Delhi, you will get full support from the Office of Career Services.
Broadly there are two career prospects: 1) higher studies (PhD programmes) and 2) jobs in the private corporate sector, public sector, banking, insurance and other financial institutions, and NGOs. The department offers a very popular Minor Area in Economics to the Under Graduate B.Tech. students. The preference for economics courses is very high among the students as it helps them to get the best jobs during the placement period.
In summer, students may undertake internships with industry, civil society organisations, government or academia. The internship is not mandatory (non-credit component) but is encouraged for future job prospects.
