Gender and Society

The course will familiarize students with contemporary conceptual understandings of gender and its relationship with other dimensions of human social life. It will explore the relationship between ‘sex’ and gender and focus on the socio-cultural processes that produce gendered identities in time and space. It will further examine the relationship of gender and gendered identities with work and economy, family, kinship, reproduction, marriage, religion and the political sphere.

Capitalism: Theory and Practice

This course seeks to critically examine the historical development of capitalism in the context of the advanced industrial and developing societies. It discusses how capitalism as a mode of production has restructured itself over the centuries. Specifically, it discusses the various theories of capitalism and the processes of transformation from classical industrial capitalism to contemporary neo-liberalism.

Sociology of India

This course introduces students to classical and contemporary theories and debates in Indian sociology including the various concepts and approaches used to study Indian society. It provides a historical overview of Indian society from colonial times to the present, focusing on processes and drivers of social change.

Social Issues: Analysis and Policy

The course will introduce students to major social issues facing the society and help them appreciate the relevance of psychological theory and research to the understanding of these issues. The course will provide a balance between major social psychology perspectives, research in the field and introduce students to the various intervention strategies related to social issues. The policy implications of social psychology research and interventions will also be discussed.

Inclusive Innovation: Theory and Practice

Helping students understand and engage with the innovation process, especially the special conditions of inclusive innovation, from both a theoretical as well as practical perspective

Perspectives on climate change: Implications for policy

Anthropogenic climate change is one of the defining global environmental challenges of this century. Policy-making for complex environmental problems (like climate change) requires harmonizing knowledge and action in the scientific, socio-economic and political domains. The objective of this course is to help students explore the complexities of climate change policy-making in a world characterized by scientific, economic and political uncertainties and to understand that science itself is in part determined by social and political context in which it arises.

Approaches to Science and Technology Policy Studies

This course will introduce students to various theoretical approaches to study science and technology policy. It will explore six identified themes central to understanding science and technology policy processes and outcomes, and study how different theoretical approaches seek to overcome the challenges in each.

Introduction to Science and Technology Policy Studies

This course will introduce students to basic concepts of policy making, how policies are crafted to meet societal objectives or developed in response to societal challenges, and what factors might determine their success, with science and technology providing the context for understanding the above.
